Bernese Oberland: Renowned Peaks, Mountain Spas, Alpine Trails

The imposing snow-capped mountains of the Jungfrau region offer an impressive setting for a wealth of summertime activities, including more than 500 kilometres of hiking trails; world-renowned mountaineering challenges; 50 kilometres of toboggan runs; paragliding and bungy jumping; as well as canoeing, fishing, rafting, and swimming in crystal-clear mountain lakes and rivers.

Some of the most popular holiday resorts in the region are Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, and Mürren. Hop on the rack railway at Grindelwald for a good introduction to the region and take an excursion up to the Jungfraujoch, "the top of Europe."  The Jungfraujoch, at 3454 metres altitude, is the highest railway station in Europe and offers breathtaking views.

The Jungfrau region is a large-scale playground for walkers and hikers of all levels. The 500 kilometres of signed footpaths are connected by modern cableways and offer everything from easy paths suitable for families with pushchairs to challenging Alpine trails and passes like the Aletsch Glacier Walk. Trails offer breathtaking panorama of the world-famous peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, as well as cosy mountain restaurants along the way.

This area of Switzerland is home to some of the world's most famous mountaineering challenges, including the Eiger (3870m); the Jungfrau (4158m); Mönch (4109m); Wetterhorn (3602m); and the Breithorn (3780m).

The 160 kilometres of signed mountain bike routes crisscross the region offering easygoing family circuits to an 88-kilometre marathon tour. In Grindelwald, cyclists can find five bike hotels, qualified bike guides, a bike circuit to help improve technique, bike tours, and readily available GPS and maps for orientation.

The region offers plenty of summer activities for families, including barbecue and camping sites; adventure playgrounds; indoor and outdoor swimming pools; toboggan runs; and excellent child care facilities.

Other popular summer excursions in the Jungfrau region include a visit to one of the 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley, particularly the impressive Trummelback falls; a ride on the Mannlichenbahn, the longest gondola cableway in Europe, up to the Männlichen with its panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau; and lunch in the Schilthorn - Piz Gloria, which is the first rotating restaurant in Switzerland.

Active summer holidays in the Jungfrau region are often coupled with a relaxing stay in a luxury mountain spa. Well-known spas in the area include the Alpine Sports Centre in Mürren and the Wellness Oasis in the Grindelwald Sports Centre. Both spas feature indoor pools, saunas, hot tubs, and pampering massage and beauty treatments to ease aching muscles after active mountain holidays.

There are regular direct flights between many European capitals and the airports of Zurich, Geneva, Basel, and Berne. Zurich and Geneva have their own railway stations with direct connections to Interlaken. Lauterbrunnen can be reached within 20 minutes and Grindelwald in 35 minutes by the Bernese Oberland rack railway from Interlaken.
