The Hintertux Glacier in Mayrhofen-Zillertal opens for summer skiing May 5 to Oct. 13.
The glacier, at 3250 metres, is home to the steepest glacier skiing in Austria. It is also one of the few remaining glaciers open 365 days a year. It offers a good range of runs for all levels, and thanks to its steep slopes offers some very challenging runs for experts.
In summer, 18 kilometres of slopes are open and served by nine lifts. It also boasts the highest World Cup halfpipe in Europe as well as funboxes, table-tops, and rails at Betterpark. High-tech lifts including the Glacier Bus 3 with 24-person cabins are capable of transporting 3000 skiers per hour from the bottom to the top of the glacier. The Glacier Lift Station is a 15-minute walk from the centre of Hintertux.
The Tuxer Sportbus is a free bus service which operates all year round transporting guests from Vorderlanersbach, Lanersbach, Juns or Madseit to the bottom of the Glacier Lift Station. The lifts are directly at the huge day-visitors car park.
The village itself, at the head of the valley, has thermal springs. There are also more than 250 kilometres of hiking trails and Natursport Tirol offers active sports like paragliding, canyoning, flying fox, and caving.
A day's skiing costs €35,50 adults, €28,50 youths, and €17 children.
