Leukerbad is hosting the International Literature Festival July 8-10, which offers a colourful varied literary programme. The Literature Festival was established in 1996 and has gradually grown from an insider's tip to a fixed institution.
National and international authors will read at various locations around town: St. Lorenzbad, hotel bars, the old train staion, the Roman baths at Lindner Alpentherme, and on the Gemmi Pass at midnight.
Many other events are taking place in Leukerbad this summer: the 350-kilometre Gigathlon running race July 1-3; the Swiss Chess Championship July 7-15; the 20th Summer Curling Tournament July 8-10; the Shepherd Festival on Gemmi July 31; the Varen Wine Weeks Aug. 29 to Sept. 24; the swimming-cycling-running Gemmi-Triathlon Sept. 10; the Gemmi Sheep Procession with barbecue and music Sept. 11; and the Swiss Country Music Weekend Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.
Leukerbad is located in the Swiss region of Valais, which stretches 150 kilometres along the Rhone Valley. The Valais region offers a picture-perfect slice of Swiss landscape, ranging from 4000-metre peaks and steep rock faces to lush pastures and underground lakes.
The diverse countryside between the Rhone Glacier and Lake Geneva offers a summer paradise for hiking, mountain biking, golfing, rafting, fishing, climbing, canyoning, paragliding, and helicopter skiing.
